Thaipusam at Batu Caves in Malaysia is an important Hindu festival, celebrating the deity Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Soorapadman. Worshipers perform act of penance and devotion by piercing their body with hooks and skewers. The devotee in the photo has himself suspended from a contraption that is wheeled through the crowds. Framing this image I made sure to capture the man’s eyes as well as the statue of the deity smiling benevolently in the background.

Printed with archival inks on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk paper each print is approved, titled, numbered and signed by Hans and includes a certificate of authenticity. Each image is available in four sizes, 10”x15” (roughly 25X38cm) in an edition of 50, 12”x18” (30X45cm) in an edition of 50, 16”x24” (roughly 40x60cm) in an edition of 35 and 20”x30” (50x75cm) in an edition of 25. Prices of limited edition prints will continue to rise as the edition sells.
Print sizes are approximate, depending on the image crop. All images are printed with a 5cm white border for ease of handling. The size mentioned is the size of the photograph and does not include the border (so for the true size of the paper add 10cm both to the length and the width)
